We made it

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am deeply honored to have been elected Chair of the SSC. It is hard to find words that express my gratitude for the numerous supporting messages that I have received, which provide the fuel for what will clearly be an exciting and significant professional challenge. I am also very lucky to have an outstanding network to reach out to for council and advice, as it has already become evident after just over a week at the job!

During the next two to three months, I will be working with Simon and his team on finalizing the numerous details of taking charge. The primary tasks ahead are to appoint the Steering Committee, as well as the Chairs of Specialist Groups, Red List Authorities, Task Forces, Sub Committees and Partnerships. Likewise, I will compile all your comments and finalize the draft of the 2017-2020 IUCN Species Strategic Plan: Enhancing Conservation Action. Finally, I plan to establish contact with past and future supporters of the SSC to finalize the details of our cooperation.

I am very pleased to announce that the day after the election, Council held its first meeting in Honolulu and they approved my nomination of Domitilla Raimondo as SSC Deputy Chair. Domitilla, who has played key roles in the Red List Committee and the Plant Conservation Sub-Committee, is currently head of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)’s Threatened Species Programme. Domitilla is committed to advancing national red lists and their use in support of conservation action and public policy.

Looking forward to working with you all over the next four years,

Jon Paul
